Colorpool Gig @ Sunday Roast,
Sheffield, Jan 2004
"Blimey! There really are a lot of un-signed bands out there! Obviously you know this, cos you've got your nose in this fine magazine. With so much competition though, particularly on occasions when half a dozen bands play in one night, it's hard to stand out in the crowd. But on the 25th of January, at Sunday roast, one such band did.
Colorpool are a three piece
that gel together beautifully like an audio sandwich. The first thing you notice
about the trio is the tightness of their sound. The drummer (Ritchie) who derives
from Scunthorpe, plays with such power and yet 'keeps the beat' with such accuracy,
you wonder if there's a quantize button on the back of his head. If you don't
know what quantize means, ask the person who records your stuff into the computer.
He loves his drums this lad and after the second song, the shirts off (steady
girls!) and you know he means business. Think: 'animal from the muppets', but
less brightly coloured).
On the other side of the stage, and from the other side of the uk, that being
Wales (insert your own sheep shagging joke here) is Liam, the bass player. Liam
has to be seen to be believed. Jumping and spinning round the stage with a manic
grin on his face, its clear that the bass guitar is controlling him, rather
than the other way round. He's lost in the music and doesn't want to find his
way out!
And so to the singer/lead guitarist. Being a Sheffield lad, John fits in the middle of the stage and country. The rocky-yet-melodic sound of his guitar and voice bring the band together perfectly. He's also got long hair, and its worth remembering that its always a good idea to have one member of a band with long locks. Keeps it interesting you see. He sings well, and before you've got time to wonder if he can play well too, he's reeling off a solo, having an 'axe duel' with that frenzied bassist.
Sounds entertaining? Funny,
because that's exactly what they are. Entertaining. You realize that these three
people are having a really good time up there on the stage, and it's infectious
because you find yourself having a good time too! The up tempo sound only adds
to this feel good factor, with songs such as Bad Apple (the best bass-line you'll
have heard in ages) and Sweet Barraca, which includes a section where the band
will have you believe that they've forgotten what they were playing - there's
a moment of silence where they look at each other with a puzzled expression
on all their faces, before slamming back into the song, bang on time! In short,
if you want entertaining with great sounding music to boot, go see Colorpool."

Review for www.getreadytorock.com
"I always like listening to new bands as I am not stuck in one era musically and one of the pleasures of running the Newswire and helping out on Get Ready To Rock has been discovering bands like Power Quest, Black #5, Jarcrew, Up! Kings of Leon and Intense to name but six! I can add Colorpool to this now as well.
A UK based three piece comprising John (guitar/vocals), Liam (bass/vocals) and Ritchie (drums/vocals). Pop rock is their bag and D-Minus is a catchy little guitar driven number that kicks off after a neat bass/drum intro.
The band use melodies well and could be the Wildhearts with less punk attitude. Drift Away again has a rumbling bass underpinning the frantic guitar and some bizarre background vocals . It reminds me of early XTC.
So many bands out there vying for your attention but Id single this band out as worthy of more investigation."

Review for www.alt-uk.com April 2004
"Colorpool are a Sheffield/Scunthorpe
based band who are always looking for more exposure so if you are out there
and are in a position to help the band out then just drop them an e-mail at
info@colorpool.co.uk and tell them exactly what it is that you can do to help
out a band that are currently unsigned yet definitely deserve more. They are
influenced by guitar bands from The Beatles right through to Nirvana and the
Foos this really comes across in their music as it is extremely
diverse and you can tell that there are many influences which contribute to
the sound which is created by this fine band.
All material is currently recorded in the bands garage, however you would never
have guessed as this CD is really professional sounding and this just proves
the quality of the band if they can turn a garage recording into a masterpiece
then just think of the possibilities with a major label signing this
band could create the best album in history. They are just a 3 piece so the
sound which is created by the band is that of a very raw one and sounds spot
on. I have listened to this CD many times already as it has been in my CD changer
for quite a while now and I must say that in a matter of no time you will be
singing along to this CD and humming it regardless of what you might be doing
at the time. It really gets to you and makes you think about it long after you
have turned it off, which I guess is what music about really working
the mind and making you think. This band are so good at what they do
the vocals are spot on, the drumming is amazing, the bass is unbelievable and
the guitar riffs are just incredible with their driving sound. I could not possibly
pick a favourite with this CD as I like all of the tracks way too much to choose
and it would be an extremely hard decision to make perhaps even impossible.
I absolutely love this band and really think that they have something special
going on, there is obviously a lot of chemistry here and if they stick at it
then they are definitely on to a winner. In the profile it says in capitals
that they are DEADLY SERIOUS so taking this in to account there
is really no reason why they shouldnt score some sort of a record deal
before long."

Review by Honey Records , Liverpool, March 2004
"Honey's Verdict: Comin' at yer like a pork pie outta Sheffield, Colorpool are certainly colourful. All 'woo-hoos' and chickens, with super-funky basslines and quirky vocals thrown in. Edgy sound. Stylish. Geeky. And everything in between! 'Drift Away' is the strongest and maddest track, and we reckon the other tracks need a bit more madness added to 'em pronto! Go 'ead nutters, you know you want to."

Colorpool Gig @ The Grapes, Sheffield, April 2003
"So praise be to Colorpool. It was great to watch a band that seemed as happy to be on the stage as they would be playing air-guitar in the garage back home, complete with the old-skool rocknroll flailing of limbs and chipper commentary. The mosh-worthy instrumentals reminded me of the Foo Fighters before they went all serious rawk music on us.
Stag followed, seriously slick, polished and precise, the lead singer could really wail... But after Colorpool, I just wanted a little more good ol fashioned movement and a lyric that clawed annoyingly at my brain for the following weekend (think Colorpools opening song)."
- Sandman Magazine
"Someone had to wake the Baths Hall audience from their slumbers and the Sheffield trio did it in style. Very solid and tight their short and punchy well executed pop rock anthems got the place buzzing."
- Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph
"Last on were Colorpool and at nearly midnight this is not an easy time to play. But they took up this challenge with good humour and produced rock/pop of a very high standard and tightly delivered. They finished strongly with a good last number (Drift away) and put on a show."
