My Deaf Audio
...Are The New Black
Rating: 2 hearts

Brighton’s My Deaf Audio have been kicking around since 1999 and have released a clutch of well received EPs and one LP (“Night Drive In”) of retro garage rock. How they’ve managed to build up a following and gain critical acclaim when there’s a million bands doing this kind of thing considerably better in the last few years is a bit of a mystery to me unless their previous records seriously dick all over this EP.

Imagine a slower, janglier Hives without the charisma or famous-for-five-minutes-thanks-to-the-NME types like The D4 or The Datsuns and you know what to expect from My Deaf Audio. Tracks like “Get Out, Right Now” and “Communication” also bring to mind The International Noise Conspiracy if they filled their lyrics with rock’n’roll clichés instead of their powerful political convictions.

On the whole this is a pretty bland and uninspiring record. If it had come out a couple of years ago, My Deaf Audio would have had a good chance of jumping on the garage rock bandwagon and scoring some success. Releasing this record in 2005 gives the band a good chance of fading into obscurity.

Track Listing:
1. Get Out, Right Now
2. Turn Off The World
3. Communication
4. We’re Convicted
Score = 4/10
